Doorway to your system!

Mouth is the gateway to your body. Just like how food enter your stomach through your mouth, bacteria can also enter your system via mouth. What are the problems these bacteria are capable of producing? Read on!

Infected gingiva- a reservoir of bacteria!

In individuals with periodontitis, bacteria and bacterial toxins have access to circulation (blood). Your body is constantly fighting these bacteria to prevent them from causing systemic infection.

To remind you, periodontitis is the extension of the gum disease (gingivitis),which is left untreated for a long time.

Can poor oral hygiene affect your heart? Your brain?

Yes. And yes! As mentioned above, bacteria from an infected periodontium constantly try to enter your blood stream. Daily activities like brushing and chewing food hastens this process.

To combat this attack, body produces immune cells in large quantities than normal. When there is a constant bacterial load, these immune cells remain abundantly in blood. This makes blood more viscous. Increased viscosity increases the risk of myocardial infection and stroke.

Presence of systemic infection prior to stroke surges the severity of neurologic defect.

How does it affect diabetic people?

Individuals with or without diabetes, bacteria reduces insulin take-up by cells. In diabetic patients, this leads to increased blood sugar levels.

In pregnancy,

As shocking as it may seem, periodontitis can cause pre-term labor. While bacteria are not the direct culprits, but the immune response of the pregnant woman to these bacteria may induce early labor.

Human beings are consistently exposed to various bacteria and virus. Although everything cannot be averted, we can control the things in our hands, in this case, our mouth.

Maintain proper oral hygiene. Also visit your dentist regularly and keep bacterial count in your mouth as less as possible.

Flossing trend is back, only this time to make you smile brighter. Yes! I am talking about dental flossing. Everyone knows the importance of flossing yet only a handful actually do it. We believe if you know the proper way to do it, you may start flossing your teeth. So here we are with a new post. Significance of flossing:             A tooth has 5 sides, when you brush you are cleaning only 3 sides. Then what happens to other sides? That is where bacteria are staying happily. Flossing is the best way to clean those two sides.       You can put a stop to plaque build-up thus preventing infection of gums (also following periodontitis) by flossing.
