Think you're healthy? Facts behind dental delusions!

Myth is nothing more than ancient gossip! Some of the dental myths have existed for years and are being passed down to generations. It's high time that we decipher the truth behind these myths.
Root canal treatment is painful & horrifying.
Untreated decayed tooth is more painful than root canal treatment itself. The treatment is usually done under local anaesthesia and you can be at ease once the treatment is completed.
Like my great grandfather, I'm going to brush my teeth using neem sticks!
This is nothing but a folk tale. Neem branch only does more harm than good. It can easily wear off your enamel causing sensitivity. The same goes for tooth powder.
I do oil pulling regularly, I won't have any teeth problems.
Oil pulling is only an adjunct to your regular oral care (brushing & flossing). Though oil pulling can reduce bacteria, it is only up to 20%. Also, already existing cavities and hard deposits can only be treated by professionals.
Anyway baby teeth is gonna fall out soon!
Tooth decay causes distress and anxiousness in kids. Untreated carious teeth can cause damage in underlying permanent teeth. Good oral habits can go long way in maintaining overall health.
Gum disease is only related to mouth.
NO! This is a common misconception among people. Mouth is the window of your body. Bacteria in your mouth act as reservoir and enters the blood stream causing different systemic illness.
I treated my teeth, so it has life-long guarantee.
There is no guarantee for life, how can you ask for teeth? Oral cavity should be given meticulous care including your treated teeth for a longer durability.
I can manage with a broken tooth.
When a full tooth gives in due to excessive pressure, how can you manage with a broken tooth? You must not ask for the unreasonable. A broken tooth, a restored tooth, a root canal treated tooth are all crippled and should be used with caution.
Brushing with salt and lemon water can make your teeth whiter.
No. Lemon being acidic when used along with salt makes it easy to remove your enamel. This can cause permanent damage. If you want a brighter teeth, visit your dentist to know about safer bleaching techniques.
Dental decay is only caused by sugars/ sweets.
Sugar is not the main culprit but the bacteria, that feed on it, is! The sticky foods rich in carbohydrates (chips, candy) attract bacteria. These bacteria produce acids that damage your teeth.
Brush harder to get cleaner teeth.
It is the technique not the intensity that matters. Brushing harder with hard bristles can wear off your teeth easily. This causes sensitivity and decay.
Brushing teeth is all that is needed!
For a cleaner and healthier mouth, brushing your teeth, gums and tongue is important followed by flossing. Brushing 70% + Flossing 30% = 100%
When your gums bleed it is better to stop flossing.
Bleeding gums is a sign of gum problem. Get it treated by visiting your dentist and continue flossing to steer clear of such problems in the future.
Diet drinks do not cause any problem to your teeth.
Diet soda also contains carbonic or phosphoric acids that cause erosion of your enamel. This can cause sensitivity.
You can use tooth pick to remove food stuck between two teeth/ tooth and cap.
Using tooth pick can injure your gums badly. The best way to remove the food deposits between your teeth is to use a floss.
There is no difference between sensitive toothpaste and a normal toothpaste.
No, sensitivity pastes have special ingredients to reduce sensitivity and does not have a strong cleaning effect. So use a sensitivity toothpaste only when necessary.
If you don't know why you are doing something, then don't do it? Accidents can happen but cavities don't have to!

WHAT IS THE HASSLE ABOUT ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE?

Being in the middle of a pandemic, we think this would be the best time to discuss antibiotic over usage. To dodge another possible pandemic, it is high time we use the antibiotics in our hands wisely. New resistant strains of bacteria are growing so fast that we are running out of antibiotics to treat them. WHO has released a list of bacteria for which new antibiotics are needed. HOW DO ANTIBIOTICS WORK? To make something clear, not all antibiotics kill all bacteria. Certain antibiotics are effective against certain bacteria.    To simplify, these antibiotics specifically target the components or a particular process of microbes which is not found in the host (humans).      Generally by studying the symptoms or nature of the infection, the likely causative organism is decided and apt antibiotics are given. In unfamiliar scenarios, pus culture is done to find out the causative organism. ANTIBIOTICS IN DENTISTRY:     Use of antibiotic...

What you should know about teeth-spacing?

Don't we all dream of a perfect set of teeth without spacing or crowding? Well spacing is common in children and mostly gets corrected by itself as permanent teeth come in. Except in few cases, where timely diagnosis and correction can make that dream come true. This is where regular dental visits come into play!     Generalised spacing Localised spacing- Midline diastema   Midline diastema (spacing)- gap between two upper front teeth.   Causes of midline diastema include, High frenal attachment Mesiodens- an extra tooth between two upper teeth Ugly duckling stage (explained later in this post) Retained milk teeth Midline pathology- cyst, tumor Pressure habits   Some causes of generalised spacing can be, Pressure habits- Tongue thrusting, thumb sucking Macroglossia- Tongue size larger than normal Microdontia- Teeth size smaller than the jaw Macrognathia- Jaw size larger than teeth Loss of permanent teeth Unerupted ...

FOODIES....ALERT!

Many food substances you think that are healthy for your body are not exactly doing good for your teeth. This doesn’t mean you should stop eating them. Especially now that we all stay in our home, we can’t keep our hands off those snack shelves. But you can make few modifications and you are good to go. We would like to provide you with some acuity on how to keep those damages to the minimum. Beware of the ‘crunch’:     The ‘crunch’ of the potato chips is eternally satisfying to many of us. Unfortunately, they are loaded with starch. This becomes feeding ground for ba...
