Teeth Whitening

All that glitters are not gold! Same way all your white teeth are not healthy and vice versa. Moreover a healthy adult tooth is yellowish white in color. So before you want to whiten your teeth, think twice. If your answer is still yes...glance through!
Know about the stains in your teeth!
Stains in your teeth can be external or internal.
External stain due to beverages
External stains can be due to plaque build-up, tobacco, beverages (tea, coffee)
Internal stain- fluorosis

Internal stains are hard to remove. They can be due to fluorosis, any defects in development of teeth (dentinogenesis imperfecta, amelogenesis imperfecta), dental decay or trauma.
How to remove these stains?
As in any process, the first step would be to decide the cause. This can be done by taking proper history and evaluation of teeth.
Usually whitening of lower teeth is not required. Because they are covered by lower lip while speaking.
Teeth whitening can be done in dentist's office or at home under the supervision of a dentist.
Why you should think twice?

  1. Teeth sensitivity is the most common side effect. It is greatest during the first week and declines after a week or two. Sensitivity toothpaste can help to minimize it.
    Gingival burn
  2. Soft tissue irritation
Teeth whitening at dentist's office:
Stains can be removed by mechanically abrading the superficial layer of enamel or using teeth whitening gels.
Number of application depends on the degree of stain.
Be it at office or at home bleaching, teeth should be prepared accordingly. Teeth should be free of caries/ faulty restoration. It should be cleaned thoroughly before the procedure.
Teeth whitening at home:
Using unsupervised over the counter whitening gels pose serious risks on teeth and surrounding soft tissue.
Dentist prescribed home gels contain lesser concentration of carbamide peroxide (whitening agent) to reduce any accidents. Your dentist will give you a custom made tray to apply the gel. Duration and number of application depends on the degree of stain.

So if you decide to get your teeth whitened, get it done by a professional. Everyone yearns for a bright smile. But don't do anything at the cost of your own health.
  Smile....It lets your teeth breath!

WHAT IS THE HASSLE ABOUT ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE?

Being in the middle of a pandemic, we think this would be the best time to discuss antibiotic over usage. To dodge another possible pandemic, it is high time we use the antibiotics in our hands wisely. New resistant strains of bacteria are growing so fast that we are running out of antibiotics to treat them. WHO has released a list of bacteria for which new antibiotics are needed. HOW DO ANTIBIOTICS WORK? To make something clear, not all antibiotics kill all bacteria. Certain antibiotics are effective against certain bacteria.    To simplify, these antibiotics specifically target the components or a particular process of microbes which is not found in the host (humans).      Generally by studying the symptoms or nature of the infection, the likely causative organism is decided and apt antibiotics are given. In unfamiliar scenarios, pus culture is done to find out the causative organism. ANTIBIOTICS IN DENTISTRY:     Use of antibiotic...

What you should know about teeth-spacing?

Don't we all dream of a perfect set of teeth without spacing or crowding? Well spacing is common in children and mostly gets corrected by itself as permanent teeth come in. Except in few cases, where timely diagnosis and correction can make that dream come true. FOODIES....ALERT!

Many food substances you think that are healthy for your body are not exactly doing good for your teeth. This doesn’t mean you should stop eating them. Especially now that we all stay in our home, we can’t keep our hands off those snack shelves. But you can make few modifications and you are good to go. We would like to provide you with some acuity on how to keep those damages to the minimum. Beware of the ‘crunch’:     The ‘crunch’ of the potato chips is eternally satisfying to many of us. Unfortunately, they are loaded with starch. This becomes feeding ground for ba...
