A few things to know about your kid's braces!

Do the right thing at the right time or you will regret later! The right time to visit a dentist would be as early as possible. Many parents have the same question....when and how to tell if your child needs braces. We would like to give an overview on dental braces for your kids.

Why is it important?
Though aesthetics play the most important role in deciding whether to get braces or not, there are also other factors that come into play.
     Improperly aligned teeth,
  • are difficult to clean causing decay and gum diseases
  • make pronunciation of some letters difficult
  • may lower self-esteem and make people socially anxious.

Reasons for irregular arrangement of teeth:

To know more about oral habits, check our previous post.

Know the basics!
Irregularities in teeth arrangement can be due to,
Abnormality in underlying bone(jaws)
                 Or
Improper positioning of teeth
                 Or
                Both
Importance of dental visit at an early age:
Any anomaly in bone growth (under or over growth) can be treated when found out at an early age. On the other hand, this may require a surgery in adults.
A tedious orthodontic procedure can be dodged when an improper positioned tooth is found at an erupting stage.
The importance of visiting a dentist cannot be emphasized more. The first dental visit must be around the eruption of first tooth (around 6 months) or at least during first birthday.
A dental visit around 6-7 years of age is critical for analysing the proper growth of teeth and jaws. Since the growth stops gradually after puberty take caution.
What happens if you miss the right time!

In the first picture you can see what an overgrowing lower jaw looks like. In the second picture you can see a kid wearing a gear to stop the overgrowth. This can only be done if you find it out early or else this might need a surgery.

In the first picture you can see a tooth growing into an abnormal position being corrected using just an ice-cream stick. In the second picture you can see how if the same tooth continues to grow into that improper position would be treated using an appliance.
Above are just examples, there are many such conditions that can be treated so easily in the early stages and the same would require more strenuous treatment in the adults.
Straight teeth are more than just attractive; they keep your child's mouth healthy for a life time. Let your kids have beautiful smiles and happy faces.

WHAT IS THE HASSLE ABOUT ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE?

Being in the middle of a pandemic, we think this would be the best time to discuss antibiotic over usage. To dodge another possible pandemic, it is high time we use the antibiotics in our hands wisely. New resistant strains of bacteria are growing so fast that we are running out of antibiotics to treat them. WHO has released a list of bacteria for which new antibiotics are needed. HOW DO ANTIBIOTICS WORK? To make something clear, not all antibiotics kill all bacteria. Certain antibiotics are effective against certain bacteria.    To simplify, these antibiotics specifically target the components or a particular process of microbes which is not found in the host (humans).      Generally by studying the symptoms or nature of the infection, the likely causative organism is decided and apt antibiotics are given. In unfamiliar scenarios, pus culture is done to find out the causative organism. ANTIBIOTICS IN DENTISTRY:     Use of antibiotic...

What you should know about teeth-spacing?

Don't we all dream of a perfect set of teeth without spacing or crowding? Well spacing is common in children and mostly gets corrected by itself as permanent teeth come in. Except in few cases, where timely diagnosis and correction can make that dream come true. This is where regular dental visits come into play!     Generalised spacing Localised spacing- Midline diastema   Midline diastema (spacing)- gap between two upper front teeth.   Causes of midline diastema include, High frenal attachment Mesiodens- an extra tooth between two upper teeth Ugly duckling stage (explained later in this post) Retained milk teeth Midline pathology- cyst, tumor Pressure habits   Some causes of generalised spacing can be, Pressure habits- Tongue thrusting, thumb sucking Macroglossia- Tongue size larger than normal Microdontia- Teeth size smaller than the jaw Macrognathia- Jaw size larger than teeth Loss of permanent teeth Unerupted ...

FOODIES....ALERT!

Many food substances you think that are healthy for your body are not exactly doing good for your teeth. This doesn’t mean you should stop eating them. Especially now that we all stay in our home, we can’t keep our hands off those snack shelves. But you can make few modifications and you are good to go. We would like to provide you with some acuity on how to keep those damages to the minimum. Beware of the ‘crunch’:     The ‘crunch’ of the potato chips is eternally satisfying to many of us. Unfortunately, they are loaded with starch. This becomes feeding ground for ba...
