FLOSS LIKE A BOSS!

Flossing trend is back, only this time to make you smile brighter. Yes! I am talking about dental flossing. Everyone knows the importance of flossing yet only a handful actually do it. We believe if you know the proper way to do it, you may start flossing your teeth. So here we are with a new post. Significance of flossing:             A tooth has 5 sides, when you brush you are cleaning only 3 sides. Then what happens to other sides? That is where bacteria are staying happily. Flossing is the best way to clean those two sides.       You can put a stop to plaque build-up thus preventing infection of gums (also following periodontitis) by flossing. Which one to pick?       There is no one “right” floss for everyone. You can try different types and use which is comfortable for you since there is no difference in plaque removing ability.   ...

Problem with sensitivity?

Be it relationship or your teeth, being overly sensitive is not always good. Though we cannot counsel you on relationship, we certainly can give insight on teeth hypersensitivity.       When the outermost layer (enamel) is stripped off your teeth, you experience hypersensitivity. This can be due to mechanical or chemical (acids) causes. You can spare yourself from the pain, by knowing what you are doing wrong. Improper brushing:         Brushing harder/longer/using a hard brush does more harm than good. Your enamel can be worn out. So know the proper way to brush your teeth from our  previous post . Gum disease:           Due to improper oral hygiene or old age, your gums recede exposing the root. Since roots do not have enamel, you may experience hypersensitivity.           Though we cannot do a...

Know it all- Fluorides!

Same way, by following proper guidelines from your dentist, you can make a virtue of fluorides. Fluoride is a solace for high risk caries individuals. High risk caries individuals: Poor oral hygiene Diet rich in sugar or caries causing food Those who wear orthodontic brackets Individuals with less saliva secretion (due to medications) Children with special health care needs Pregnant women Mechanism:     When you use fluoride containing tooth paste/ mouth rinses, it strengthens your teeth in 3 ways. It decreases the solubility of tooth by incorporating fluorapatite crystals which is not naturally found in your teeth. It can reverse caries at early stages. It also inhibits production of acids by plaque bacteria. Fluoridated toothpaste : 20-40% reduction in caries     Ki...

Story of your tenant!

Hay all! It’s your boy Streptococcus mutans. For those who don’t know, I am a bacterium. Me and my friends live in your teeth. Unlike you, I always work from home. I may be a tenant but my landlord always pays the rent (price). And this is my life story. Let’s get to my humble abode…          My place (i.e. tooth) has two parts- crown (the visible portion) and the root (which provides support and stability).        It has three layers- Enamel (outermost), dentin and pulp. My dream is to get to bone for which I have to unlock three stages. Unlocking first level (enamel)       My landlord often forgets to brush twice and never flosses. So I get more food to feed on (Yay!) and I produce acid which gives me pass to explore into the tooth. When I am here he won’t feel a thing. He may notice some color change which he neglects. Unlocking second level (dentin)  ...
